Carpenter ants come in various sizes and species. They vary in color from black, red or brown. The ants and especially workers come in sizes from 1/8 to 5/8 inch. Carpenter ants have a queen who rules her colony. There is only one Queen per colony. The Queen can grow to 1 inch long.
Carpenter ants in the house usually mean an infestation is located in the house near a source such as damp wood. If you see sporadic ant activity, then they may be just foraging for food. Damp wood is usually were the ants are found. However, there may be wood piles or leaves. There may indeed be a satellite carpenter ant nest elsewhere. The best way to locate the ants and follow them back to the nest.
