BALDFACED HORNET

Baldfaced hornet is actually a yellowjacket.  It is sometimes called the white-faced hornet, but is actually a yellowjacket.  It is around an inch long and is colored black and white.  It is a large, with a body length of up to 3/4 of an inch.  Baldfaced hornet is the larger species, typically over 15 mm in length.  

Baldfaced hornet is actually a yellow jacket and not a true hornet.  It is significantly smaller than the European hornet and typically remains outdoors.

Cicada killer is commonly found in residental areas, city parks, forest edges, golf courses and oil tank farms.  They is a solitary wasp, so you will only find one wasp per burrow.  They is a solitary wasp rather than a social wasp like the yellow jacket.  They is a solitary insect, which will burrow into soil for nest making.  Cicada killer is named because of their prey of choice – adult cicadas.

YELLOW JACKET

Yellow jacket has a smooth stinger that can be used to sting multiple times.  They are one of the most feared , because of its burning sting.  It is a social insect that lives in nests and/or colonies.  They can live in aerial paper-like hives or in old mouse borrows.  Yellow jacket will turn night into day.  

Yellow jacket is about .5 inch long and the abdomen is characterized by having alternating yellow and black bands.  They is 3/8 to 5/8 inches long and the queens are about 25% larger and longer.  They is always going to be a bit divisive.  It is notorious for disturbing many cook-outs, gardening chores and other outside activities because of their aggressiveness.


MUD DAUBER

Mud Dauber is a form of wasp.  This particular wasp is known by the mud that is caked on your door with a hole in the middle where wasp can be seen going in and out. Mud daubers are solitary wasps that construct small nests of mud in or around homes, sheds, and barns and under open structures, bridges and similar sites. Several species exist in Iowa. These wasps are long and slender with a narrow, thread-like waist. Some are a solid steel blue or black but others have additional yellow markings
