Appearance

  • Size: Odorous house ants, sometimes called odorous ants, are small, measuring 2.4 to 3.3 mm in length.

  • Color: They have dark brown or black bodies with one node on their petiole, which is hidden by their abdomens.

  • Shape: Odorous house ants have an unevenly shaped thorax when viewed from the side.

  • Smell: The most distinguishable characteristic of odorous house ants is the smell of rotten coconut that is emitted when their bodies are crushed.

Nesting

Odorous house ants are opportunists, nesting both indoors and outdoors. Nests are found in a great variety of situations. Indoors, odorous ants can nest in wall crevices, near heaters, water pipes, under carpets, beneath floors or sometimes behind paneling. They are most likely to invade buildings during rainy weather. Odorous ants travel in trails, foraging day and night. Outdoors, odorous house ants place their shallow nests beneath soil as well as in logs, mulch, debris and under rocks

Diet

Odorous house ants forage for food night and day. Outdoors they prefer honeydew from aphids and mealybugs. When the honeydew supply is reduced in autumn, they may move indoors for food. Indoors, they eat meats, sugary foods, dairy products, pastries, cooked or raw vegetables and fruit juices. When alarmed by a predator, worker odorous ants will move in quick, erratic motions, raising their abdomens into the air.

Little Black Ant

Little Black Ants

Little black ant swarms are common from June to August, during which time they forage in trails and are frequently seen along sidewalks. These small ants feed on grease, oil, meats, fruits, and vegetables materials such as corn meal and sweets. The workers also feed on other insects, honeydew and plant secretions.

Habitat

Little black ants are common in wooded areas. In yards, they nest under rocks, in rotting logs, and under piles of bricks or lumber. Indoors, nests are located in woodwork, wall voids, decaying wood, masonry, and behind facades.

Threats

Little black ants do have a stinger, but it is often too small and weak to be effective..

How To Get Rid of Little Black Ants

Homeowners should consider working with a licensed pest professional to employ a preventative pest management plan. There are also a few things that can be done around the property to prevent a little black ant infestation.Seal cracks and crevices in exterior walls with a silicone-based caulk, ensure firewood is stored at least 20 feet away from the home, and keep shrubbery well-trimmed to prevent an infestation. It's also important to note the location of the nest. While it can be difficult to see these ants due to their small size, their nests can be found by following the trial of workers back to the colony.

Texas Leaf Cutter Ant

Texas Leaf Cutter Ant

Texas Leaf Cutter cut up green leaves and buds and carry them in columns to their nest, located in well drained sandy or loamy soils. They chew the vegetation into mulch and use it to grow fungus, on which they feed almost exclusively, in underground chambers. In addition, they eat corn, cornmeal, flour, rice, peas, wheat, oats, bread, cake and coffee grounds.  All colonies haver several queens. Their population can grow into the millions of workers.  They bite but do not sting.

Habitat

Leafcutting ants build their nests in soil. They are primarily outdoor pests found in warm, agricultural areas. However, it's not uncommon for leafcutting ants to be found nesting in urban neighborhoods. They also occasionally enter structures, but leave quickly.

Leafcutting Ant Prevention

Nest location is critical in the prevention of leafcutting ants. Trailing workers can usually be found and followed at night when they forage. Often there will be leaf pieces along the trail and at the nest entrances, which are a sign of these ants.

Consider working with a licensed pest professional to employ a preventative pest management plan.
