These spiders are active year-round but most abundant during summer in chaparral deserts, and other arid habitats. They hide by day under rocks or in crevices; at night they are often found sitting very still on rocks and walls, where their cryptic markings can make them difficult to find. There are 4 additional species of crab spiders found across the southern United States.
